CREATIVE PROCESS

  • Preliminary images are drawn and colored preparatory to silk-screening.

  • White fabric is placed on a cardboard surface. A fish template is air-brushed in yellow.
  • The yellow fish is covered with another template and small areas are air-brushed serially in orange, green, black, blue, yellow and green fabric paint.
  • Lastly, Meryl removes the blocking template of the fish to reveal the underlying untouched yellow color.
  • She can now silk-screen detailed images of the fish onto the exposed yellow area.
  • The process is repeated for six panels with fish images facing in one direction and six others facing the other way.
  • Similar techniques are used to make sets of crab and seahorse panels. Two closely paired panels are chosen from each set of images for the final work.

  • Silk-screening and extensive hand painting to enhance the silk-screen designs are completed for all six panels.
  • The panels are pieced together with bands of black cloth.
  • A teal blue silk is chosen for the quilt backing and liner.
  • These are sandwiched together. Once this step is finished, elaborate quilting completes the work.
