Screech Owl, An Art Quilt is formed from a silk-screened photograph of the bird in Florida.

  • This art quilt is the product of a series of close-up photographs I took of a screech owl I encountered while visiting my daughter in Florida.
  • One of the resulting photographic series is chosen and photo silkscreened onto ten large panels of white cotton cloth by means of a ten-color separation process.
  • The best panel is embellished by air-brushing and hand-painting with fabric paints. Colored pencil details are added.
  • Colored cloth patches are appliqu├ęd to further enhance the image.
  • Black fabric borders are sewn in around the completed central panel.
  • Cotton batting is sandwiched between a backing of black fabric and the decorated front panel. Swirling patterns are imparted by machine stitching with many colored threads (called thread painting). It is achieved by free-motion stitching in which the feed dogs are dropped.
  • Displayed at Solo Show: Teapots and Textiles, Maine Fiberarts, Topsham, ME, September-December, 2016.
  • Date: 2016.
  • Size: 30.0" x  24.0".
