FRUIT OF THE LOOSE TEA AND BRIEFS, A CERAMIC TEAPOT

A teapot in the form of t-shirt and briefs.
  • These works, stoneware ceramic teapots, constitute a contemplated series of Tee Pots, all thematically related by variations in tee-shirt representations.
  • The title of the first, Fruit of the Loose Tea and Briefs, is a complex wordplay on Fruit of the Loom brand of undergarments, loose tea (for use in the functional teapot), and tee (for the tee-shirt, of course). The work is made by press mold and sculpted slab construction.  A  skull and crossbone emblem is added for embellishment, applied with a vitrified decal treatment on the tee-shirt. A camouflage design is used for the briefs and trimming. The elevated right sleeve serves as the teapot's spout and the label on the back of the shirt is the lid.
  • After sculpting is complete, each piece is allowed to dry before underglazes are applied, kiln firing begins, and decorative coloration is done.
  • Construction sequence:
    • First fired to cone 06.
    • Underglazes applied; clear glaze to area for decal..
    • Refired to cone 5.
    • Decal is applied.
    • China paints enhance the coloration in layers.
    • Final firings to cone 018.
    • Cold finishes added to complete the work.
  • Date: 2011.
  • Size: 8.5" x 8.0" x 4.75".
  • Available for purchase: Price $800.
